Have you noticed how the price of food seems to be going up? The last time I bought butter I was shocked. Expert’s advice on saving money and simultaneously eating well is to be more mindful about food waste.
According to Waste Reduction Week in Canada, over half of the food this country produces is wasted. Some in the retail supply chain, but on average Canadian householders are spending over $1,700 on food that is wasted every year!
The answer is to focus on quality versus quantity. Look for high-fibre and nutrient-dense food such as certified organic fruit and vegetables that may cost a bit more, but provides you with so much value in the long run. Another way to reduce waste is to learn how to store your produce properly. Also, freezing, drying and pickling excess produce is better than letting it go bad in the fridge if you don’t think you will be able to eat it all.
Food waste is not only bad for the pocketbook but also bad for the planet. It puts stress on our food system and is a contributing factor to food inequality and food insecurity. If we all make more of an effort, it would benefit everyone.
