The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is proud to present the NOTL Arts Collective Fall Group Show, running from October 24 to November 24, 2024, in the Walker Room Gallery. This exhibition features a diverse collection of artworks created by the talented members of the NOTL Arts Collective, showcasing the remarkable creativity and artistic excellence in our community.
This year’s exhibition holds special significance as it features new members of the Collective who are showcasing their work for the first time. One artist, a long-time member and instructor at the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre, shared her excitement: “Returning to Niagara after 5-1/2 years and having the opportunity to participate in the NOTL Arts Collective show with my friends and acquaintances has reiterated the meaning and joy of ‘home.’ I’m grateful that, after this span of time, my contribution to this (first time for me) show is still welcomed.”
Regarding her work on display, Wintrop shared, “The painting ‘Autumn Study’ is a small portion of a larger piece by Lawren Harris that I’ve admired for years and never thought I could replicate. My friend always says, ‘The more you paint, the better you get,’ so I keep practicing. Embracing the challenges of the creative process is always my favorite part.”
Returning artist Darren Cranford elaborated on his work in the show: “This artwork captures an intimate moment of love and tenderness between my fiancée and daughter, portraying the deep emotional connection they share. The piece was built with layers, starting from the raw, expressive texture of charcoal on canvas, followed by a sepia-toned oil glaze that brings warmth and nostalgia to the scene. Finally, detailed oil painting enhances the contrast and adds depth, highlighting the figures’ delicate expressions and their bond. The choice of mediums allows for a blend of realism and emotive storytelling, making the piece both personal and timeless.”
Another member, Lorraine Kelly, spoke about her own work in the show: “The paintings ‘Irises II and III’ were inspired by plants that I inherited from my father, an avid gardener. I used watercolour and pastel and framed them in a shadow box frame. I find the frame gives the paintings depth and a new dimension.”
This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to witness the diverse perspectives and artistic expressions that define the Niagara-on-the-Lake arts scene. Whether you are a seasoned art lover or simply curious about local talent, the NOTL Arts Collective Fall Group Show promises to be an inspiring and unforgettable experience, connecting visitors to the rich art and culture of this beautiful town.
