Welland, ON – On Tuesday, May 10, the City of Welland will participate in the Provincial Day of Action on Litter, supporting keeping our environment and community clean.

The City is committed to taking action on reducing waste and encourages residents to participate by managing waste going to landfills and preventing litter from entering our environments.

Debris entering our waterways can break down into micro-plastics and hurt wildlife and ecosystems, which can cause long-term negative impacts on our environment.

“Our City is fortunate to have a body of water in the recreational canal that provides a safe, clean source of drinking water and serves as a place to be active and enjoy the outdoors,” said Rob Axiak, director of community services. “As a community, we can work together to prevent the entry of unnecessary garbage or refuse into an important feature in our City.”

Residents who wish to participate in the 2022 Provincial Day of Action on Litter can volunteer to clean up Welland’s local parks, streets, neighbourhoods, and the Niagara College area. When collecting garbage, all participants should consider wearing highly visible clothing or vests and other protective clothing, gloves, and footwear.

Public Works will provide garbage bags available for Welland City Hall reception. Participants can drop off full garbage bags at the Welland Arena on King Street, where City employees will dispose of the collection.
