The Bartlett pear (pronounced BART-let) is a classic favorite. We just finished harvesting our crop and are excited to offer them to the community. Bartletts have a true pyriform shape: a rounded bell on the bottom half, followed by a shoulder and a smaller neck or stem end. They’re extremely aromatic and carry that definitive “pear flavour. Initially green when harvested, they turn yellow as they ripen. Enjoy them green for a crunchy, tart experience, yellow-green for moist and mildly sweet and golden yellow for super sweet juice. Remember, all pears need to ripen at room temperature!
Bartlett pears are versatile and can be used in both sweet and savory dishes. Here are a few delightful recipes to try:
- Bartlett Pear Salad:
- Slice ripe Bartlett pears and toss them with mixed greens, crumbled goat cheese, candied pecans, and a light vinaigrette.
- Add some dried cranberries or pomegranate seeds for extra flavor.
- Bartlett Pear Tart:
- Roll out puff pastry and arrange thinly sliced Bartlett pears on top.
- Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, then bake until golden brown.
- Drizzle with honey or a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and lemon juice.
- Bartlett Pear Chutney:
- Peel and dice Bartlett pears.
- In a saucepan, combine pears with chopped red onion, ginger, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and a pinch of red pepper flakes.
- Simmer until thickened and serve with roasted meats or cheese.
- Bartlett Pear Smoothie:
- Blend peeled and cored Bartlett pears with Greek yogurt, a splash of orange juice, and a touch of honey.
- Add ice cubes and blend until smooth.
- Bartlett Pear Crisp:
- Slice Bartlett pears and toss with lemon juice, sugar, and a bit of cornstarch.
- Layer them in a baking dish and top with a mixture of oats, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon.
- Bake until bubbly and golden.
Remember, the key to enjoying Bartlett pears is their natural sweetness and juicy texture. Feel free to get creative and experiment with these recipes! 🍐😊
