This June, the Town of Pelham is lacing up and getting ready to compete in the ParticipACTION Community Challenge for a chance to win the title of Canada’s Most Active Community and $100,000 to support local physical activity initiatives.
The Pelham June 30 for 30 challenge is returning to encourage residents to be active for at least 30 minutes for each of the 30 days in June. All physical activities, from walking, cleaning the house, pickleball, gardening, swimming, or even running a 5K, count towards the total active minutes. A calendar of activities for all ages and abilities will be available on the June 30 for 30 section of the Town website. Activities range from ideas for what residents can do at home to free opportunities to try popular sports such as tennis and pickleball. A printed version is also available at the Meridian Community Centre and Town Hall.
As part of the 2024 June 30 for 30 challenge, the Town of Pelham has received a $1,300 grant from ParticipACTION to support a partnership with Pelham Cares Inc. to help promote and deliver sports and physical activity opportunities for Pelham residents. The grant will provide Pelham Cares free class passes that will be distributed to eligible residents for drop-in programs offered at the Meridian Community Centre or for swim classes at the Pelham Pool.
“Pelham Cares is excited to offer class passes as additional support for residents,” said Pelham Cares Inc. Vice President and Fundraising Chair Nancy Yungblut. “Through the class passes, we are able to expand opportunities for recreational activities for both youth and adults and continue to provide residents with ways to enhance their well-being.”
New this year is the 55+ Walk-a-thon, which kicks off at the Meridian Community Centre on Monday, June 3rd, from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the upper-level walking track. Participants will receive a tracking sheet to log their minutes as well as refreshments. Advance registration for the Walk-a-thon is encouraged through the June 30 for 30 section of the website or by calling 905-732-7871.
“I am excited to see how many minutes Pelham residents will log this June,” said Town of Pelham Director of Recreation Culture and Wellness Vickie vanRavenswaay. “Each year the June 30 for 30 Challenge has shown what an active community Pelham is!”
As part of the ParticipACTION’s Annual National Community Better Challenge, residents, schools and businesses are all encouraged to track their physical activity minutes. The Challenge is open to everyone, and every minute tracked from June 1 – 30 counts towards the Town of Pelham’s total score.
The June 30 for 30 challenge also coincides with Parks and Recreation Month and Senior’s Month. The Town of Pelham has participated in the ParticipACTION challenge since 2021.
The ParticipACTION Community Challenge presented by Novo Nordisk is proudly funded by the Government of Canada, Novo Nordisk and supporting partner, Saputo.
