Over 30 athletes from the Niagara Region recently competed at the Legion National Track and Field Championships held in Calgary.
The championship was the largest in the competition’s history, bringing over 1,000 of the nation’s top athletes together. Athletes representing Niagara-area track clubs earned 11 national medals and also set a handful of records.
Gold medalists were Ayla Laing (Thorold Elite) in the U18 girls 3,000-metre racewalk; Josee Regala (Athletics Niagara- representing Team Ontario) in the U16 girls pentathlon; Maeva Scipio (Thorold Elite) in the U16 girls 200-metre hurdles; Samacki Thomas (Athletics Niagara-representing Team Ontario) in the U16 boys long jump; and, TJ Woods (Thorold Elite-representing Team Ontario) in the U16 boys 800-metre. Thomas, along with Lemuel Sraku-Antwi (Thorold Elite), also won gold as part of Team Ontario’s U16 boys 4×100-metre relay and helped set a championship record of 42.92. Thomas earned a third gold medal as part of Team Ontario’s U16 boys sprint medley.
Thorold Elite’s Amairah Gayle earned two Silver medals in U16 girls long jump and high jump as part of Team Ontario. Woods also ran to Silver in the U16 boys 1,200-metre — just 0.01 seconds off of gold in a photo finish.
