Pelham residents are encouraged to wear their Poppy as part of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 613 Poppy Campaign. Mayor of Pelham, Marvin Junkin, received the first Poppy and is getting ready to support the annual Remembrance Day services.

From now until November 11th, Poppy collection boxes can also be found at the Meridian Community Centre, Town Hall and at over 180 locations in Pelham including participating local area businesses. Donations collected for the Poppy Campaign through the boxes, which now accept tap payments, support Canadian Veterans and their families. The November 11th service, presented by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 613, will be provided at Veterans Park on the Legion grounds and will begin at approximately 10:45 am. Residents are invited to participate in the service.

The Town of Pelham in conjunction with other municipalities have provided financial support to allow the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum to provide the memorial fly-over of area Cenotaphs on November 11th with their vintage military aircraft. This year the museum, weather permitting, will have both the B25 Mitchell Bomber and the “D Day Veteran” C47 Dakota aircraft taking part in this meaningful act of remembrance.

“The Town is proud to support the Legion in their Poppy Campaign and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum Remembrance Day services this year,” said Pelham Mayor Marvin Junkin. “It was an honour to be the first to receive a Poppy as part of the campaign and continue to recognize the dedication and sacrifices made by Canada’s veterans and those who continue to serve.”

The Town of Pelham, in partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 613 Legion, has expanded the ongoing Veterans banner program this year. The street banners, installed mid-October and will remain until following Remembrance Day, are on display throughout the areas surrounding Town Hall and the Meridian Community Centre. The program recognizes local veterans and their service. This year nine additional veterans joined the already 47 previously recognized as part of the program. Applications for the program are ongoing and are available at Pelham Town Hall or Branch 613 Legion Hall.

On November 11th, all flags at municipal facilities will be lowered to half-mast. Town Hall and the Meridian Community Centre will be closed in observance of Remembrance Day.
