In the realm of culinary enchantment, few ingredients wield as much magic as dried herbs. These seemingly humble pantry staples have the power to transform ordinary dishes into extraordinary culinary experiences.
The Art of Preservation: Drying herbs is an ancient practice that dates back centuries, a method born out of necessity and refined into an art. The process involves carefully removing moisture from fresh herbs, concentrating their flavours and extending their shelf life. This simple yet effective preservation technique allows us to capture the essence of summer’s bounty and savor it throughout the year.
A well-stocked pantry filled with an assortment of dried herbs is akin to having a potion cabinet at your disposal. Thyme, oregano, and basil can transport you to the sun-soaked hills of the Mediterranean. Crafting your unique blends adds a personal touch to your culinary creations, allowing you to tailor flavors to suit your taste.
Rumar Farm has now added herbs to their on-line store. All were grown on our farm during the summer of 2024 and are certified organic and biodynamic. Here are some of the herbs we are offering:
Basil: Used in a variety of dishes, particularly in Italian cuisine. Varieties include sweet basil and Thai basil.
Parsley:
Often used as a garnish, parsley has a fresh, slightly peppery flavor. It comes in two main varieties: curly and flat-leaf (Italian).
Cilantro: Commonly used in many international cuisines, especially in Mexican, Indian, and Southeast Asian dishes.
Thyme: Has a subtle, earthy flavor and is used in a variety of dishes, including soups, stews, and roasted meats.
Winter and Summer Savoury: Mediterranean herbs, great for seasoning meat, fish, soups or roasted vegetables. Add to oil and vinegars for a delicious salad dressing.
Sage: Known for its savory and slightly peppery flavor, sage is often used in stuffing, sausages, and other hearty dishes.
Dried herbs are the unsung heroes of the culinary world, weaving magic into our everyday meals. As you embark on your journey through the aromatic landscape of dried herbs, savor the enchantment they bring to your kitchen—turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, one sprinkle at a time.
An assortment of fresh herbs makes a thoughtful Christmas gift for the culinary enthusiasts on your list.
