At their Annual General Meeting on May 28, 2023, Pelham Regional Councillor Diana Huson was reappointed for a third term to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Board of Directors.
FCM has been the voice of local government across Canada for over 120 years and plays an important role in advocating for municipalities. FCM works to ensure the needs of the nation’s cities and towns are reflected in federal policies and programs.
As part of the board, Councillor Huson contributes to setting policy priorities that reflect the concerns of municipal governments around the country. The board meets quarterly to develop positions on federal policies that effect local government in Canada.
Federal decision makers have a long-standing practice of working with the FCM Board of Directors when making decisions that will affect municipalities, including the allocation of direct funding. Having Councillor Huson return to the FCM board will ensure that Niagara will continue to have strong representation when decisions are being made at a national level.
Councillor Huson was appointed to 1 of just 9 seats through a highly competitive election process by her peers across Ontario. As part of Councillor Huson’s role on the FCM board she has served on a variety of subcommittees including:
- Standing committee on Increasing Women’s Participation in Municipal Government
- Co-chair, Standing Committee on Environmental Issues & Sustainable Development
- Standing Committee on Social Economic Development
- FCM Governance Working Group
