Street sweeping operations in the Town of Pelham commence Tuesday, April 6, 2021, and will last approximately two or three weeks, weather depending.
The Town of Pelham undertakes this routine maintenance as a measure of public safety; street sweeping lessens the opportunity for skids and collisions.
Regular street sweeping also reduces the likelihood of pollutants making it into stormwater systems and harming fish or wildlife. It also reduces the chances of flooding in the event of heavy rainfall as it helps to keep the gutters and drains clear.
With periods of heavy rain already this spring, Town staff have been patrolling and monitoring roadways, clearing debris and keeping catch basins clear. Residents are asked to assist in this effort, when and where safe to do so. If these basins become clogged, street and basement flooding can occur.
Residents are asked to avoid parking on the streets when possible so that sweepers can make their regular passes. Delays are expected between passes as sweepers must empty their hoppers, refill with water, or stop for a break from time to time. If a sweeper has to maneuver around a parked car, the operator will attempt to return to the area at a later date to complete the street.
