The City of Welland, in collaboration with its Green Advisory Committee, is excited to announce a series of events celebrating Earth Day 2025. Residents are encouraged to participate in the free tree giveaway, community clean-up, and the Earth Day Extravaganza at the Welland Farmers Market.
“Earth Day is a reminder of the impact small actions can have on our environment,” said Jessica Ruddell, director of community services. “By planting a tree, participating in a clean-up, or learning more about sustainability, residents can take meaningful steps toward a greener Welland.”
To promote environmental sustainability and enhance the city’s green canopy, Welland residents can register to receive a free tree sapling. Six tree species are available, each with designated pickup dates during the Welland Farmers Market:
- Saturday, April 12: red maple, white pine, tulip tree
- Saturday, April 19: sugar maple, white spruce, redbud tree
Registration begins online on March 31 and in person at the Welland Community Centre on April 1. Each household is eligible for one tree, and quantities are limited. Residents must present identification matching their registration details upon pickup. For more information and to register, please visit https://www.welland.ca/Events/eventsinfo/treeGiveaway.asp.
Community spirit can also be shown by joining the city-wide clean-up on April 19. From 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., bags can be picked up at the Farmers Market, and participants are encouraged to bring their own gloves to reduce waste. No pre-registration is required, and individuals will help remove litter and debris from parks, open spaces, and trails.
The Earth Day Extravaganza is a family-friendly event at the Farmers Market on April 19. It will feature educational displays, activities, and local organizations promoting sustainability.
