Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing crimes worldwide. Young women and girls are particularly at risk, though boys, men and people who identify as 2SLGBTQ+ are also targeted. The average age of recruitment into sex trafficking is 13 years old. Over 70% of human trafficking victims identified by police are under the age of 25. Approximately two-thirds of police-reported human trafficking cases in Canada occur in Ontario.
Ontario is investing $307 million from 2020 to 2025 on an anti-human trafficking strategy that includes actions across governments focused on raising awareness, protecting victims and intervening early, supporting survivors, and holding offenders accountable. Indigenous-specific resources are embedded throughout and include supports for Indigenous children and youth in care and leaving care, and Indigenous-led supports for survivors and at-risk youth.
Prevention is the key to stopping trafficking. Talk to youth about the dangers of unhealthy relationships. Parents need to be aware of the friends their children associate with. Spread the word.
