Members of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Welland and District Unit’s Advocacy Committee have been busy collecting and attaching red dresses to hangers in preparation for their display at various sites across the Peninsula. The goal of the REDress display is to acknowledge the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and raise awareness about the high rates of violence and available support services for survivors.
The REDress Project, created by Canadian Red River Métis artist Jaime Black, focuses on the Missing, Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2-Spirited people (MMIWG2S+), an ongoing epidemic in Canada. Through the display of these red dresses, CFUW Welland and District’s Advocacy Committee reminds us all of the gender-based violence happening in Canada and the importance of not forgetting this crisis.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence begins on Monday, November 25 (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and ends on December 10 (Human Rights Day). This powerful campaign continues to shine a spotlight on the need for action, awareness, and support for survivors.
