Cave Springs Conservation area in Beamsville is a hidden gem in Niagara. This place has been a wonder for many years going back thousands. Not far from here archeaological evidence shows a a Attawandaron village or large camp and most likely utilized the caves at one time. Cave Springs is a biodiverse place unique to our area with Carolinian forests and a wide range of wildlife and interesting geology.
Early settlers used the caves for refrigeration and its water source. It is said there may be a underground lake but the entrance to it has collapsed. Tales of WW1 German spies and mysterious carvings are also part of the lore but the best was it even came with it’s own Witch-Margaret Reed was a longtime caretaker of the land and a proclaimed good witch who taught many about the area. She lived in a house (now removed ) near the red barn and passed in 2005 at the ripe age of 300 years old. It was said the waters of the cave had fountain of youth magic.
The conservation area is now under the management of NPCA and is part of the Bruce Trail system.. another fantastic part of Niagara history and folklore.
