The Central Station Education Initiative has received a significant grant of $26,532 from the David S. Howes Fund. This funding will support the restoration and transformation of Welland’s Central Fire Station, a historic landmark dating back to the 1920s. The initiative aims to preserve the station’s unique Edwardian classical style and heritage while converting it into a versatile community centre.
Key aspects of the grant include interior plaster repairs, installation of a new metal basement door, accessible washroom fixtures, blinds, a laptop and printer, and display cases for a firefighting heritage exhibit.
The Central Station Education Initiative plans to highlight the region’s firefighting history and emergency services on the first floor, showcasing original fixtures and artifacts from the 1920s. This educational focus aims to engage visitors and the community alike, fostering a deeper appreciation for local history while promoting collaboration and creativity in Welland.
