The City of Welland is cancelling the annual Canada Day celebrations at Merritt Park due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Welland is committed to following provincial and federal guidelines to help curb the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety of event planners, organizing partners, and Niagara’s residents. Welland is currently under a state of emergency order and has cancelled all public events, closed public facilities, and cancelled programs until June 30, 2020.

The City of Welland’s Leadership Team expects normal business operations should return by July
6, 2020; however, this date is flexible and could be adjusted due to provincial and federal orders. All municipal departments and divisions are operational, and staff continue to provide essential services. The city’s senior team meets consistently to review pertinent information and make decisions to ensure community safety and business continuity.

“While this is disappointing, we need to continue with social distancing and prioritize the health of the greater community,” said Richard Dalton, Manager of Recreation and Culture. “We look forward to planning an outstanding 2021 Canada Day, and celebrating with Niagara next year.”

The City of Welland Canada Day celebrations is a community-wide festival held every year on July 1, at Merritt Park. The event brings more than 7,000 to Welland for a variety of activities, live entertainment, and a fireworks display.
