It’s not too late to pick up extra vegetable plants for your summer garden, especially when they are half price! Yes, you read correctly…. we still have a huge selection of heirloom tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, herbs, melons, cucumbers, kale, eggplant, Swiss chard, tomatillo and broccoli all on sale now.
Once you have finished planting, its time to turn your attention to weeding. Those unwanted plants that grow in-between are called weeds. They compete for water, sunlight, nutrients and space. Most weeds are aggressive and invasive and left unchecked will crowd out desirable plants. Be careful of leaving them on top of the soil thinking they’ll wither. An unexpected rain or some runoff from your hose can splash dirt over them and they are back!
Don’t leave the roots behind. Grab the weed close to the ground and pull straight up.
Weed after it rains. They come up more easily when the ground is moist. If there isn’t any rain in sight, water your garden and start pulling.
Keep your garden fork or trowel handy. The rule is ABW (always be weeding)
Pick the right hoe. If the soil is dry or if your weeds are too small, use a hoe. There are different hoes for different jobs.
Off with their heads. If you can’t get weeds up by their root, chop their heads off every now and then. This will prevent them from setting seeds and will eventually die.
Use mulch. It will help retain moisture and supresses weeds.
Don’t leave bare spots. Weeds love to move in, so fill your garden. Why not buy those extra plants from Rumar Farm at half price?? Go online www.rumarfarm.ca and take advantage of our convenient contactless pick-up shed. Look for the pink neon sign.
