Rotary Club of Fonthill Announces Rotarian of the Year 2019-2020
“For upholding and furthering the principals and ideals of the Rotary way of life”
Mel Groom and her family have resided in Pelham for 27 years, prior to that in Welland for 6 years. They have always believed it is their duty to give back to their local community.
Mel retired just over 2 years ago and was ready for more hands on volunteering as part of her retirement plan. It was a natural jump into the vibrant and active Rotary Club of Fonthill which aligns with the Groom family values. The club has organized community events such as Mudfest, Family Funfest, purse bingo, golf tournaments and an annual TV auction. Financially the club has recently supported E.L. Crossley graduation scholarships, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Bandshell Concert Series, Pelham Cares, Pelham Canada Day, Socks for Change, St John Ambulance and tablets for Seniors’ homes.
Since joining, Mel, along with club members has stepped up with planning and supporting all of the club activities taking on whatever role is required, including Club President 2018/19. Along with Rotary, Mel helps out at Wellspring Niagara and United Way Niagara. Volunteering has become her full time occupation.
Congratulations Mel and thank you for being such a shining example of the Rotary Club’s commitment to always put ‘Service Above Self’.
