The Town of Pelham is putting down roots for Earth Week by planting 30 native species trees through the support of a $15,000 investment from the Niagara Community Foundation Environmental Grants Program. The project will enhance the natural tree canopy in and bring awareness and education on conservation and the importance of the canopy.
As part of the annual earth week event, the Community Tree plant will begin at 10:00 am on Friday, April 21, 2023, at North Pelham Park. Community members are invited to participate in the family-friendly event and are encouraged to bring a shovel, gardening gloves and lots of energy. The event will be held rain or shine, and appropriate outdoor clothing is recommended. Town of Pelham forestry specialists will assist with the planting following a brief tree demonstration.
“It is inspiring to see the expansion of the tree canopy for North Pelham Park during earth week! Planting the native species is a great way for residents to get involved in activities that can positively impact the environment,” said Town of Pelham’s Director of Recreation, Culture and Wellness Vickie vanRavenswaay.
The Town of Pelham and representatives from local community organizations will be planting trees between 50-70mm in size. The tree species that will be planted include American Sycamore, Black Walnut, Bur Oak and the Legacy Sugar Maple as a tribute to the Comfort Maple. Community partners will collaborate with the plant and future workshops to bring awareness and further education on tree conservation.
The Niagara Community Foundation Environmental Grants Program focuses on bringing partners together in the community to create collaborative approaches to environmental challenges. The Town of Pelham gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Niagara Community Foundation (NCF), which is a public foundation serving the people of Niagara since 2000. NCF connects donors to causes, and communities to resources through permanent endowment funds, providing grants to eligible charitable organizations in culture, health, education, environment, recreation and social service sectors. NCF turns intention into impact.
