The HopOn program is designed to help youth master basic cycling skills and build confidence through achievement. Launched by Cycling Canada, the program is a fun, games-based and inclusive of all riders.
The goal is to provide a safe and inclusive environment for youth to socially interact and develop their on-bike skills with our trained and certified instructors. Riders will learn beginner/intermediate skills focusing on: neutral and ready position, braking, gears, pedalling, straight line riding, slow-speed turns, tilts and dismounts, 1 hand riding, pumping and front wheel lifts.
To participate, riders should feel comfortable:
- Turning quickly
- Looking behind while riding straight
- Rolling off a sidewalk curb
This program will meet each week in the courtyard of the Meridian Community Centre, but riders will utilize the local roads and trail systems. Participants are required to provide their own approved bicycle helmet, bell or horn, lights and reflectors and appropriately sized working bike.
All HopOn Instructors must complete a series of National Coaches Certification Program (NCCP) training courses, HopOn eLearning module, in-person orientation and submit a vulnerable sector background check.
