The Fonthill Lions hosted a highly successful inaugural High Tea on February 18 at the Fonthill Legion Hall. The event sold out within a week of announcement and was attended by guests from across the Niagara Region. Fancy fascinators and silly hats were a common theme. Tea was joyfully served by Lions dressed in tuxedos and suits.
To prepare for the event, the Lions posted a request on facebook for donations of tea cups, saucers, tea pots, creamers and sugar bowls. The posting needed to be removed within days because the response overwhelmingly exceeded requirements and then some.
It was a labour of love to plan, prepare, set up and clean up but well worth the effort. One interesting task was to sort and match 200 sets of cups and saucers that were randomly packaged after washing which is a lot harder than one might think. It took ten people and almost two hours to match the sets which was likened to one of those seemingly impossible challenges assigned to contestants in the Amazing Race.
The community came together to support the event which was sponsored by Sapphires Custom Jewellery, who also donated a stunning necklace valued at over $500 as a prize. Other donations included treasures from Sylvie’s Aesthetics, Styles Fonthill, In the Village Boutique, Kane Aesthetics, Beautiful Mind Thai Massages, The Post Office, Cured Charcuterie, Dube Realtors, Donna’s and many more.
Sweet Thoughts crafted a beautiful chocolate tea pot and cup for a prize donation. Beau Chapeau from NOTL showcased hats and fascinators and donated $100 gift certificate to one of the lucky guests.
The menu included an array of finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam and a variety of popular sweet treats. Contributors included The Travel Café who baked scones and brownies, La Dolce Vita provided date and lemon squares and Lion Eleanor Arbour’s fabulous butter tarts.
A special thanks also goes to Louis Marechal from the Oshawa Airport Lions Club who generously volunteered his chef skills.
All in all, it was a royally good time in support of the Fonthill Lions ongoing community service.
