Pelham Historical Society Presentation: The 1792 Hurricane
March 23 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
In 1792 a fierce hurricane (or more likely a tornado) blew through Pelham, leveling many of the trees and everything else in its path.
A Quaker visitor to the area shortly thereafter recorded the following in his journal “and truly I may say, I never saw so great destruction of timber. For about two miles in width, and said to be many miles in length, there was scarce a tree left that was not torn up by the roots, or broken off.”
Jessica Linzel, MA, Director of Community Engagement at The Brown Homestead in St. Catharines, will talk about this storm and its impact based upon research sources which include land petitions and journal entries from the period.
