Whether a natural disaster or a global pandemic such as COVID-19, emergencies are often out of our control. How we prepare for these emergencies, however, is something you can control.
At all times, but especially during Emergency Preparedness Week (May 3-9, 2020), the Town of Pelham would like to remind its residents that a 72-hour emergency preparedness guide is available for download on the Town’s website: www.pelham.ca/72-hour.
Emergency preparedness increases knowledge and reduces risks in the event of an unforeseen event; emergency preparedness is everyone’s responsibility.
“Some individuals may not have the support or capacity to deal with emergencies,” said Fire Chief Bob Lymburner. “Reach out to family, friends and neighbours who may be vulnerable or unable to support themselves during an emergency. This is everyone’s responsibility and we can help keep each other safe in the face of an emergency.”
It is important to:
- Know the risks – Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to your area can help you make a plan.
- Make a plan – It will help you and your family know what to do.
- Get an emergency kit – During an emergency, you will need some basic supplies because you might be without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency.
Emergency Preparedness encourages Canadians to take action and be better prepared to protect themselves and their families during emergencies. Emergency Preparedness Week is a national effort for provincial, regional, and municipal governments to promote public safety.
