The Angle family at 735 Sawmill Road are the most recent recipients of the Pelham Beautification Committee’s Thank You Card initiative. Heath and Laurie, along with their children Kevin (grade 9 at EL Crossley school) and Samantha (grade 8 at St Ann’s Catholic school, Fenwick) enjoy all the aspects of country living that Pelham has to offer.
Heath’s maternal grandparents, John and Hazel Moyer, homesteaded the land, clearing 200 acres and planting the many trees and flower beds that are still thriving today. The Angle family live on the retirement severance of the farm. Laurie enjoys the flower gardens, while Heath tends to the large vegetable garden, planting a variety of vegetables, including several hundred garlic plants. There are a few protected plants on their property that they strive to preserve such as yellow moonflowers (oenthera biennis) and prickly pear cactus.
Kevin and Samantha are very active in the Niagara 4H Club. The 4H motto is ‘learn to do by doing’ and Kevin and Samantha have been doing just that. This Spring, Kevin and Samantha joined the provincial group for Maple Syrup. During March, they tapped the backyard Black Walnut trees and were able to boil down the sap to create syrup. The syrup had a butterscotch taste comparable to maple syrup and was a great treat on pancakes.
Congratulations to the Angle family for their beautification and environmental achievements. It is heart-warming to see, during this time of crisis and virtual learning, that families find ways to participate in green initiatives while enjoying the outdoors.
A special thank you to all the people who signed up for the Pelham ‘Team Up to Clean Up’ campaign in the month of April. 35 groups (143 individuals) signed up to clean up the streets and country roads of Pelham. Although the clean up was postposed at the eleventh hour due to the provincial stay at home order, several groups went ahead with their cleaning efforts and others will wait for the call from Town Hall when the stay at home order is lifted. Thank you to everyone for your contributions in making Pelham a beautiful place to live, work and play!
The Pelham Beautification Committee is an advisory committee to Pelham Council. The Committee seeks to foster civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community involvement. The monthly ‘Thank You’ card program is one of the Committee’s efforts to inspire the Town’s businesses, organizations and residents to exemplify ideals defined in the Beautification Committee’s Terms of Reference, available at www.pelham.ca/beautification.
The Pelham Beautification Committee will name a recipient each month. Individuals are encouraged to submit potential recipient recommendations to the Pelham Beautification Committee at beautification@pelham.ca
