As the sun begins its slow descent toward autumn, at Rumar we have a unique opportunity to extend their growing season. Late summer can be a productive time for sowing certain crops that thrive in cooler weather or have shorter growing seasons.
Why Late Summer Planting?
Late summer planting offers several advantages:
- Extended Harvest: By planting crops that mature quickly or thrive in cooler temperatures, our clients can enjoy fresh produce well into the fall.
- Optimized Soil Conditions: The warm soil of late summer can provide an ideal environment for seeds to germinate and establish before the cooler weather sets in.
- Reduced Pest Pressure: Many common pests are less active as the season progresses, making it easier to grow your crops without constant intervention.
Crops we have planted
- Leafy Greens: Leafy greens are well-suited for late summer planting. These crops thrive in cooler temperatures and can often be harvested in as little as 30 to 50 days.
- Radishes: Radishes are a quick-growing root vegetable that matures in about 20 to 30 days. Their rapid growth makes them perfect for late summer planting, allowing for multiple harvests before the frost arrives.
- Carrots: While they take a bit longer to mature (usually 60 to 80 days), their flavor improves as they grow in cooler temperatures.
- Beets: Beets are another great option for late summer planting. They can be harvested for both their roots and greens. Beets take about 50 to 70 days to mature, so we plant them early in August to ensure a good harvest before the first frost.
- Turnips: Turnips grow quickly and can be harvested for both their roots and greens. They typically mature in 30 to 60 days, making them a good choice.
- Peas: We planted a fall crop of peas. They can tolerate cooler weather and will produce a sweet, flavorful fall harvest.
