Residents of all ages are walking in Pelham, a recognized “Walk Friendly” community. In rural areas, pedestrians share the road with motorists and cyclists. Pedestrians, please walk facing traffic and wear bright colours or reflective gear so that you can be seen. This is especially important if walking on rural roads at night. The same is true for pedestrians walking on the road in residential neighbourhoods without sidewalks.
Even in areas with sidewalks, there are often so many pedestrians using sidewalks and trying to maintain a safe physical distance, that it becomes necessary to step onto the roadway. If this is the case, be sure to face traffic when walking on the roadway, however briefly.
Pedestrians, if we walk on roadways, let’s all walk facing traffic, wearing bright colours or reflective gear, especially at night – to help keep everyone safer in our community.
