Webinar: The Stand Against the Fenians in Fort Erie – June Chipp
March 15 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Join the Niagara Peninsula Branch of Ontario Ancestors for this online (Zoom) presentation. Local Fort Erie author and historian June Chipp tells us about the invasion by Irish Americans known as Fenians in 1866. This attempted capture of Canada was a protest against British rule in Ireland, and resulted in major battles being fought in Ridgeway and Fort Erie. The presentation is based on June’s book Duty and Honour The Stand Against the Fenians in Fort Erie, and focuses particularly on the fight in Fort Erie, which was virually unknown. The talk includes information on a secret government enquiry that was published for the first time in the book.
June Chipp was born in Yorkshire, England, and emigrated to Canada as a child. She was brought up in various small towns in southern Ontario and moved to Fort Erie from Mississauga with her husband, Bill, in 2009. June immediately became interested in the local history and after extensive research published her first book A Self-Guided History Tour of Greater Fort Erie in 2012. This presentation is based on June’s second book Duty and Honour The Stand Against the Fenians in Fort Erie, which was released in 2015 to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Fenian Invasion. All of June’s books can be viewed on her website FortErieHistory.com.
