Art and community converge once again as the NOTL Hydro Box
Beautification Competition enters its sixth year. This beloved initiative, synonymous with artistic expression and neighbourhood pride, invites artists from across the Niagara Region to transform ordinary hydro boxes into works of art.
“We are thrilled to continue supporting this initiative that brings art to the heart of our community,” remarked NOTL Hydro President, Tim Curtis. “The NOTL Hydro Box Beautification Competition not only enhances the visual appeal of our town but also highlights the incredible talent of regional artists. We look forward to seeing the creative designs that will brighten our streets and engage our residents and visitors alike.”
The competition invites artists residing or operating in the Niagara Region to submit designs that embody the essence of community. The chosen hydro boxes are in key locations in Virgil, St Davids, and Queenston, ensuring maximum visibility and impact within local neighbourhoods.
Running from August 8 to October 19, 2024, the Walker Room Gallery at the Niagara Pumphouse Art Centre will proudly showcase all submissions, offering visitors a view of the creativity and artistry of their fellow community members.
“We are excited to see how artists interpret the theme of community,” states Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre Director Rima Boles.” This year’s competition not only celebrates artistic excellence but also underscores the interconnectedness of our local communities.”
A jury will select two winning designs, while the community will have the opportunity to choose the People’s Choice winner through a public vote from August 8 to September 8, 2024. All winning submissions will receive a $500 honorarium as recognition of their talent and contribution to the town’s cultural landscape. Selected artworks will adourn the hydro boxes,
injecting bursts of colour and vitality into everyday landscapes.
Key dates for the competition include the submission deadline on July 3, 2024, and the announcement of winning artworks and an award ceremony on Thursday, September 12, 2024. Installation of the selected artworks on the hydro boxes is targeted for early October.
To enter the competition, artists must complete the entry form found on the competition page of the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre website: niagarapumphouse.ca/join-give.
