High Arctic Light Exhibition Opening Reception
October 15 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is thrilled to announce the upcoming ‘High Arctic Light’ exhibition, featuring the works of artist Janet Read. From October 3rd to 29th, the captivating display will grace the Joyner Gallery, offering a mesmerizing journey into the ethereal charm and delicate essence of the high Arctic landscape. The exhibition delves into themes of luminosity, distance, and the intricate interplay that defines existence.
At the heart of the exhibition lies a spiritual response to the landscape and the imperiled ecosystems of the northernmost reaches. Read’s explorations of the Arctic in 2018 and 2023 provided the bedrock of her imaginative odyssey through this region. Employing an array of mediums such as linen paintings, hybrid drawing/painting on duralar, and intimate works on panel, she translates her personal dialogue with the landscape into a visual language that evokes emotion and contemplation.
“High Arctic Light” also stands as a poignant reaction to the urgent environmental challenges that confront the high Arctic, including the rapid degradation of permafrost, sea ice, and glaciers. Read’s art endeavors to spark a visual discourse that heightens awareness and nurtures a sense of stewardship for the delicate equilibrium of our planet.
The artist aspires to forge a profound connection between her creations and the audience, inviting them to experience the Arctic landscape on a deeply emotional level. Her interpretation of light, colour, shape, and enigma invokes a comparable emotional resonance akin to Paul Cezanne’s portrayal of Mont Sainte-Victoire or Georgia O’Keefe’s depiction of Pedernal Mountains. Through Read’s paintings, an evocative and non-literal representation of the landscape springs to life.
The public is warmly welcomed to the opening reception on Sunday, October 15th, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Attendees will have the exclusive opportunity to personally engage with the artist, savour the artwork, and connect with fellow art enthusiasts over refreshments and hors d’oeuvres. Janet Read will offer remarks around 2:30 pm. This event is generously supported by Château des Charmes, providing an assortment of fine wines. The artist also wishes to acknowledge funding support from the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the Government of Ontario.
