An adventurous, insightful, and personal documentary series where Amanda goes on a revelatory journey into some of the most important stories impacting Black people around the world.
We will be featuring two episodes from the series, including:
A Failing Grade. 45 min
Amanda travels to the UK, US and Canada and questions why Black children frequently fall through the cracks in these public education systems. Is it time for something different?
The Standard of Care. 45 min
Black maternal health is in crisis. Amanda speaks to those on the front lines and asks: What is the standard of care necessary for Black birthing people to feel safe in childbirth?
Celebrate International Women’s Day and join us for a post-screening Panel Discussion moderated by Dr. Melissa Wilson, featuring Amanda Parris, Nwakerendu (Kay) Waboso, and additional speakers.
Dr. Melissa Wilson is an educator and an anti-racist consultant. She worked in the Ontario public education system for fifteen years. Her roles included being a principal of a secondary school, a vice-principal, the coordinator of anti-Black racism education, the coordinator of Indigenous education, and a classroom teacher.
Amanda Parris is an award-winning writer, producer, and TV/radio host known for her impactful storytelling and advocacy. She is the creator, executive producer, and showrunner of Revenge of the Black Best Friend, which premiered at the Canneseries Festival in 2022. Her play Other Side of the Game won the 2019 Governor General Literary Award for Drama, and her theatrical work The Death News received the 2022 Canadian Screen Award for Best Writing.
Nwakerendu (Kay) Waboso is a PhD candidate in the Department of CHYS and also an Instructor in the Department of Sport Management, teaching the Diversity & Inclusion in Sports Organizations here at Brock University. Kay locates herself as a transdisciplinary scholar and her perspective is informed by her 3 school-aged children/athletes who inspire her stance as an advocate for representation, equity, accessibility, diversity and inclusive options for children and youth, particularly Black children and youth as an equity-deserving group.
This is a pay-what-you-can (including free) screening presented in partnership with Brock University’s Human Rights & Equity Office .
