The Social Society has been developed by the YMCA to combat social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Niagara adults now have the opportunity to participate in engaging social and recreational programming, allowing them to feel connected and enhance their skills.
All programs will incorporate time for social connections and skill development in a fun and interactive environment. During the pilot phase, the YMCA will offer two different program formats to test interest and desired impact. A combination of one-time and six-week programs will be available to allow participants to select what works best for them; see the program descriptions below for details.
“Making social connections during the current state of lockdown is very challenging “ said Steve Boone, Interim CEO, YMCA of Niagara. “This program has been developed based on local needs and allows the YMCA to continue to adapt and meet the needs of Niagara residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. The YMCA is committed to building healthy communities. Collaborating with others with a common goal and supporting the well-being and health of individuals in those communities is one of the ways we can achieve that.”
Thanks to funding from the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund, the Social Society is being piloted at little or no cost to participants. To allow for adequate program evaluation, the YMCA requires each participant to complete a pre and post survey. Participants may also be asked to participate in a follow up phone interview. Data collected will be anonymously shared with Niagara Region Public Health for the sole purpose of program evaluation. This information will allow the YMCA to make informed and relevant decisions related to future Social Society programs.
