Start Me Up Niagara (SMUN) is located in the Queenston neighborhood of St. Catharines and supports individuals facing poverty, homelessness, compromised mental health, substance use, and social isolation. SMUN is excited to announce the launch of “From Our Garden-Feeding the Community” program sponsorship opportunity. This program is designed to address the critical issue of food insecurity in the Niagara region by providing fresh, nutritious produce to those in need.
Vineland Research and Innovation Center graciously donated a 2-acre parcel of land which enabled SMUN to establish a farm program in 2010. Our Food & Resource Program prepares wholesome, nutritious snacks and meals using fresh ingredients from the “From Our Garden” produce. These meals are shared with local schools, seniors’ buildings, and for the weekend lunch program.
Due to the increasing demand for nutritious fresh food, “From Our Garden” plans to increase production and expand distribution this year. To achieve these goals, we need help from the Niagara community. The “Adopt a Row” program offers individuals and local business owners the opportunity to support community members in need. Laura Dumas, Executive Director, says, “With the rising cost of food, fresh produce is not within reach for many Niagara families. ‘From Our Garden’ alleviates this burden for many individuals and families in our community.” She added, “From Our Garden’ not only provides access to affordable, healthy food options but is also an opportunity for our participants to learn the art of planting, maintaining, and harvesting fruits and vegetables grown in the garden.”
The “Adopt a Row” sponsorship allows community members to actively participate in combating food insecurity and promoting sustainable agriculture. Sponsors not only support the production of fresh, locally grown food but also contribute to the cultivation, harvesting, and distribution of fresh produce to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity, building a stronger, more resilient community. We would love for you to visit our farm property, learn more about the SMUN programs, and meet the program staff, volunteers and participants who are dedicated to making a difference in our community.
