Keynote Speaker
Janet Madume, Welland Heritage Council
Janet, an immigrant from Zimbabwe, embarked on her Canadian journey in 2005, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a commitment to excellence. Her professional trajectory, marked by resilience and dedication, reflects her unwavering pursuit of growth and service.
Initially joining the Canadian Red Cross and Canadian Tire Financial Services, Janet demonstrated her proficiency as a Transportation Scheduling Clerk and Treasury Clerk. However, it was her tenure at the Welland Heritage Council where her leadership prowess truly flourished. Starting as a Bookkeeper in November 2007, Janet swiftly ascended the ranks to become the Finance Manager within three months. In this role, she adeptly managed the financial and operational dimensions of the organization, including oversight of the Employment Ontario program—Janet’s remarkable acumen and commitment to excellence culminated in her promotion to Executive Director in January 2016.
Driven by her accounting background, Janet pursued continuous academic enhancement, earning her MBA through AIB, Australia. Her relentless pursuit of excellence was duly recognized when she was awarded the prestigious International Woman of the Year award in 2010, acknowledging her outstanding volunteerism with organizations such as the Red Cross and the Canada Revenue Agency.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Janet is deeply involved in various community initiatives and advocacy efforts. As a member of the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI) and its past Board Chair, she champions the rights and welfare of immigrants with unwavering dedication. Additionally, Janet lends her expertise to several committees, including the Age-Friendly Leadership Council, the Anti-Racism Committee for Niagara Falls, and the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce – Non-Profit Council and WIN.
Janet’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of dedication, resilience, and lifelong learning. Her tireless commitment to serving others and advocating for inclusive communities underscores her status as a beacon of inspiration and empowerment.

Welland Councilor Sharmila Setaram
Councilor Setaram ran for city council to bring a people-first approach to city decision-making. Her first motion called for the city to provide access to free menstrual products at city-operated facility washrooms. She continues to champion efforts to enable people in her community to live with dignity, supporting several initiatives to improve housing insecurity.
Sharmila is an experienced human resources leader who works with executives in the Ontario Public Service to find the best leaders across the country to build inclusive and innovative teams to deliver solutions.
In 2023, Sharmila has honoured to receive the Governor General of Canada, Sovereign Medal for Volunteers. Previously, she chaired the national board of directors for Amnesty International Canada (human rights organization) and Equal Voice who advocates for equal representation of women in government. She is a graduate of Queen’s University and the University of Waterloo and hold a professional HR designation.
Dr. Secil E. Ertorer
Dr. Secil Ertorer is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Canisius University in Buffalo. After receiving her Ph.D. in Sociology with a specialization in migration, diversity, and ethnic relations from The University of Western Ontario, she has taught at universities in Canada and America.
Dr. Ertorer’s research interests are in the areas of international migration, integration, racial/ethnic/cultural diversity, racism, and identity. She finished her post-doc project on workplace diversity in Ontario. Her current research project examines anti-Asian racism and xenophobia amid the Covid-19 pandemic. She is currently writing a book on understanding prejudice and racism, which will be published by Springer Nature in 2024.Elisabeth Graham, Heartland Forest
Elisabeth Graham is the Executive Director of Heartland Forest Nature Experience in Niagara Falls, a unique natural attraction with a passion for accessibility, active living and environmental stewardship. Elisabeth brings a wealth of personal experience and expertise in the fields of disability. She has a degree in Administrative Studies with a specialty in Human Relations and Social Organization. Since its inception, Heartland Forest has nurtured an environment where children, youth and adults of all abilities have built lifelong connections with nature through dynamic programs. From the accessible woodworking shop to the inclusive children’s adventure camps, employability sessions and adult day programs, Heartland inspires and enriches the lives of all people.

Inspector Paul Koscinski
Inspector Paul Koscinski has been a police officer and a member of the Niagara Regional Police Service for the past 24 years. In his current role, he oversees Professional Development and Labour Relations, which include Recruiting, Training, Equity Diversity and Inclusion, and Member Support. During his career, Paul has worked in Uniform Patrol, Street Crime Unit, Criminal Investigations Branch, and the Drug Unit. He has held several leadership positions and provided support to investigative teams, including as the Officer in Charge of the Special Victims Unit. Paul was born in Poland and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1989. He holds a master’s degree in criminology and criminal justice.
