Entering its eighth year of providing a single point of access to Niagara’s open data, today the Niagara Open Data Community Consortium marks another milestone with the relaunch of NiagaraOpenData.ca, a community data catalogue where users can access data from across the region.
Open data is data that can be freely used, re-used and redistributed by anyone with very few restrictions. The data is provided to support transparency and accountability of organizations or to drive innovation and innovative approaches to address challenges faced in our community.
The Niagara Open Data catalogue was updated to better support open data needs throughout Niagara by providing its users with the knowledge, tools and resources to better understand and better utilize open data. The catalogue enhancements include:
- More information about available data
- Onsite tools to explore and visualize data
- New request system to help users find and access requested data
- Information on how to work with data and connect to other open data resources
In Niagara, open data is used to develop data literacy skills in our youth, support region-wide planning and development projects, develop businesses and to build applications that are used globally.
The Niagara Open Data Community Consortium is composed of local area municipalities, educational institutions and community service agencies, and actively seeks to improve how it engages with the catalogue’s users and open data community.
