The Meaning of Home contest is now open! The contest invites grades 4, 5 and 6 students to submit a poem or essay on what home means to them. Every local Niagara student entry provides Habitat for Humanity Niagara with a $10 donation, courtesy of founding sponsor Sagen™.
Grand prize winners earn $30,000 for their local Habitat, while runners-up receive $10,000, along with prizes for themselves and their class.
Teachers can access a free education module with lesson plans that align with Language Arts curriculum, fostering creativity, grammar, and critical thinking. Some of the curriculum requirements that can be addressed through the Meaning of Home contest include:
- Producing an original piece of work that encourages independent critical thought
- Organizing ideas and writing for an intended purpose or audience
- Writing to express thinking and communicate personal opinions
- Developing proper grammar, spelling and punctuation
- Fostering proofreading, editing and revision skills
