The Beaverdams Church is one of the oldest remaining Methodist chapels in the province. built in 1832 not far from The War of 1812 Battle of Beaverdams. The Church and Burial grounds served the local farmers and community.
The Reverend Egerton Ryerson was the first preacher who later was principally responsible for Ontario Education system. The church now technically sits on a (almost island) Peninsula off Marlatts Rd. The Valley was flooded to create Lake Gibson in 1904.
The church is a New England style structure with two entrances. It saw service up until 1890’s. In 2014 the Friends of Beaverdams started a restoration of the building and have returned it to its former glory.
Interesting note the day I took the picture flying over I was with David Griffiths. His family played a prominent part in this area and it was kind of historic to fly over this building with Dave sitting in the plane with us.
