Community Fridge Niagara is thrilled to announce the opening of their first community fridge and pantry located at 16 Keefer Road in St. Catharines in partnership with Robert’s Electric. The grand opening is marked with a celebratory event held on site on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 2:00 PM.
The community fridge and pantry welcomes participation from all neighbours operating on a “take what you need, leave what you can” model. Community members are encouraged to contribute fresh produce, dry goods, commercially prepared foods, and personal care supplies directly to the fridge and pantry located at the north side of the building.
Community Fridge Niagara is building a network of grassroots fridges for and by neighbours across the Niagara region in an act of solidarity and mutual aid. These community fridges serve as a neighborly response to food insecurity through the provision of low-barrier outdoor fridges and pantries that are accessible 24/7. Community fridges act as a food access point for anyone that may benefit without judgment, assumption, eligibility criteria, or surveillance.
This project is made possible through the work of organizers, volunteers, community members and supportive host site businesses. “We recognize that people have the power to care for one another and ensure that we all have access to what we need,” says Community Fridge Niagara Co-Organizer, Steph Aiello.
Community Fridge Niagara is the latest addition to community fridges in St. Catharines. In 2021, Lincoln County Humane Society and Covenant Church also opened community fridges servicing their neighbourhoods.
Community Fridge Niagara continues to seek out host site locations for additional fridges across the region. Any businesses interested in allocating approximately 6’x3’ outdoor space are encouraged to connect via email.
