With a wide variety of wood, there is never a piece that comes out of the workshop looking the same. One of the great things about living in the Niagara Region includes sourcing organic materials such as wood right from your own backyard farmers! The Market @ The Village presents this week’s vendor feature, “Rustic and Resin”.
A young startup small business, the birth of Rustic and Resin was a direct consequence of the current pandemic. Jeff Webster, founder and owner of the company, has worked and owned his own business in the painting industry for the past ten years. He recommends the pursuit of an entrepreneurship if, an only if one is passionate and willing to pick away at the work daily. “If one truly is passionate about their trade, they do not recognize it as work; it is more of a hobby that you can get paid for”.
After spending many years panting walls, the same brushstrokes, same process of completing a task exactly how the client instructs you to, Jeffs mind became bored, and the job turned stale. It was not until the pandemic opened a large window of free time, that Jeff developed his skills and kickstarted his side project, Rustic and Resin into something bigger. As his mind craved the opportunity to be creative, product development for Rustic and Resin became the primary goal this spring. Now, with a greater focus on marketing and getting people around the region to recognize Rustic and Resin, Jeff has pitched his tent here with us at The Market @ The Village. “The Market has really exceeded my expectations; people have been coming out, asking a bunch of questions and really loving the charcuterie boards. I even have Market customers reach out after Saturday for custom orders!” Jeff does custom orders for live edge tables, benches, and epoxy tables.
Jeff Webster utilised his creative energy and skillset in painting & wordworking to lay the perfect foundation for Rustic and Resin. As the name describes, Jeff takes rustic looking pieces of wood and adds resin product to colour and provide character to each piece. Jeff designs and assembles charcuterie boards, none of which look identical, serving trays, live edge benches and tables. Even the plain walnut charcuterie boards are all slightly different looking. The handcrafted handles are always unique, and the natural pattern seen on the surface of the wood, otherwise known as the figure, is a simply wonderful product of natures beauty, again giving each piece a unique character. While the first few days of the week are usually spent in the shop, making products or consulting with clients about their custom orders, the end of the week is more marketing and selling focused. Producing a charcuterie board once all the raw materials are gathered takes Jeff about an hour, and with the addition of the resin, about 2 – 2.5 hours. Jeff enjoys crafting custom tables, yet designing a table is much more technical and requires precision, compared to the creative free willing nature of his “perfectly imperfect” boards.
While the charcuterie boards are a top seller this summer at the Market, we asked what Jeff has in store for the hobby turned small business this winter. Jeff revealed “there is talk with potential customers about wholesale deals and we will have ongoing communication with customers for orders through Facebook, Instagram, our website and calls to the shop”.
