Built in 1808 The Decew House (Decou) is arguably one if the most famous Historical sites in Niagara.
Built by John Decew not far from The Morningstar Mill and Decew Falls where he had built one of the first Saw Mills this Limestone house was also used by the British in the War of 1812 and was the destination of Laura Secord and her famous walk to warn Fitzgibbons of the American plans.
After the war John lived here till 1834 and sold the house to David Griffiths. The Griffiths owned it until 1942 when it was sold to the Ontario Power Company and was empty until 1950 when it burnt to the ground only leaving the stone foundations we see today.
This weekend Dave Griffiths returned to his home. He lived here when he was a young child and has memories of this Historic place. Dave is now in his 90s and is a longtime resident of The Beaverdams area. The site is now part of the Laura Secord trail and home to the First Nations Monument.
Thanks to Jim Hutchinson for the pictures of David Griffiths at his former home.
