Sean Stanley -Jazz pianist/vocalist/bandleader of “The Sean Stanley Trio”/Quartet, from Scarborough Ontario (Turtle Island) “Canada”. Sean is one of the only “Indigenous” (Pottawatomi/Ojibwe & Acadian) musicians in Toronto and comes from a much less privileged background than the majority of his peers and contemporaries. Overcoming homelessness in his teens and being surrounded by addiction and mental health issues, these and other experiences molded him and his music greatly. These challenges prepared him to navigate the often elitist and “tribal” nature of the Toronto Jazz/music scene, Sean and his group including Chris Adriaanse (Bass), Andrew McCarthy (Drums) and new Juno award winner Kyle Tarder-Stoll (Tenor Sax) are fast becoming one of the more “in demand” Jazz bands in the city.
Sean’s musical journey began at the age of 11 playing the popular music of the day, starting on guitar and eventually migrating to the piano by age 17. Studying the Jazz & Blues greats such as Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Erroll Garner and of course, Billie Holiday….. “Jazz” Music became his main focus.
Beginning to perform professionally in 2014, he honed his skills as an accompanist, composer and bandleader on the bandstand and is mainly a self-taught musician.
Sean’s accomplishments include a Harlem restaurant Residency from 2015-2019, Taste of the Danforth 2019 as well as many other club dates and more recently, appearances at Jazz Bistro, Crow’s Theatre, Oud & Fuzz, SOLD-OUT performances at Reid’s Distillery’s “Gin & Jazz” as well as busking on the streets of Toronto during the pandemic to make ends meet and provide a supplemental income for himself and his musicians. Currently you can find Sean and his group playing all over the GTA and beyond, follow them on their social media for upcoming performance dates.
Kyle Tarder-Stoll is a saxophonist from Toronto, who has performed and toured across multiple the globe. A graduate of Humber college, he has played with many prestigious musicians, such as The Shuffle Demons and Caity Gyorgy, who just won a Juno for vocal jazz album of the year – an album Kyle was on. Kyle performs regularly around the GTA.
Andrew McCarthy (B.Mus) is a native of St. John’s, Newfoundland and has been an active member of the diverse music scene of his hometown for the past decade as percussionist, drummer, composer, and educator. Andrew’s passion for music has led him down several paths of study such as: completing a Bachelor of Music at Memorial University where he majored in Percussion Performance, two different trips to the Volta reigon of Ghana studying traditional Ewe music, and most recently to Toronto to study Jazz at Humber College with top level international artists. Notable experiences at Humber were working with Artist in Residence Pat Metheny performing his music with legendary Canadian Jazz Gutarists Ted Qunlan’s student ensemble and playing for Terri-lynn Carrington alongside Lisa Martinellis Jazz Vocal ensemble. In 2014, Andrew received the Side Musician of the Year award from MusicNL and won the 2019 ECMA for Jazz Recording of the year with Ouroboros on the album Kitchuses. Regardless of style or venue, Andrew performs with grooving authenticity and exemplifies his love for the art of music in every performance.
Music has taken Chris Adriaanse on many adventures. He has played most of the Toronto/GTA bars, clubs and venues. He has toured through Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Austria, in many venues in the USA and from home to Halifax and to Quito, Ecuador. Chris has appeared in many festivals including the Montreal Jazz Festival, The Rochester Jazz Festival, Eco Art & Media Festival, TD Toronto Jazz Festival, 416 Improv Festival, iMix Festival, Let There Be Art Festival, Indie Week, Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, CMW, NXNE, Bradford Jazz Festival, Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival, Scarborough Jazz and Blues Festival, Long Winter Series and the Regent Park ‘Magic City’ Festival with the TSO.
Chris always had an profound interest in the learning process, and believes strongly that the best part of playing music is sharing it with others. For these reasons he always knew he needed to include teaching in his endeavors. He currently teaches private lessons in any style of guitar, electric bass and acoustic bass, music theory and idiomatic and non-idiomatic improvisation. His approach to all lessons is simple in concept; everything centred around learning to listen to music actively and intelligently, and approaching the gain of music literacy and proficiency patiently, one bite at a time. Chris currently teaches in Toronto at his own studio and at Scarboro Music.
