The City of Welland’s Cooling Centre is expanding its hours to better serve the public and shelter people from extreme temperatures. When Environment Canada issues a heat alert, the city’s cooling station will be open 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Cooling Centre is located at the 160 East Main St. Transit Terminal. Transit staff are encouraging people to wear face coverings while inside the Transit Terminal. Welland Transit washrooms are open and available to the public.
Environment Canada issues a heat alert when two or more consecutive days of daytime maximum temperatures are expected to reach 31°C or warmer and night-time minimum temperatures are expected to fall to 20°C or warmer, or when two or more consecutive days of humidex values are expected to reach 40°C or higher. Heat alerts are issued 18 to 24 hours in advance of extreme temperatures. Public Health advises everyone to take precautions during episodes of extreme heat and humidity; however, seniors, young children, and people with disabilities are most vulnerable in these conditions.
