The Notre Dame senior girls soccer team made sure the third time would be the charm Wednesday in the Niagara Cup AAA final at Youngs Sportsplex in Welland.
After losing the last two Niagara Cup finals to Holy Names from Windsor, the Fighting Irish finally got over the hump with a dominant 3-0 victory over the St. John Henry Newman Cardinals.
Two goals from Reese Rotella and another by Mia Marchio helped the Irish overwhelm the Cardinals, who were held without a shot during the 40-minute game.
“They didn’t have a shot on goal but they are a really good team. They beat BT (Blessed Trinity) which is another really strong team and I am impressed with how our girls played,” Notre Dame coach Marco Guglielmi said. “They are buying in and I am happy for them winning, This is our third time here and we finally won it.”
Notre Dame defeated Frontenac 3-2 in penalty kicks and Eden 5-0 in round-robin play and then defeated Saint Michael’s 3-0 in the semifinals.
