Meet The Vendors: “The Hive” Products
The Market @ The Village presents Pamela Sutherland and “The Hive” products. Throughout her career as an aesthetician, Pamela’s interest in skin and beauty products evolved into something more than a routine part of the spa services she provided for her clients. She noticed there was a gap in what she had imagined the skincare products used in her services would do for her customers and what they actually accomplished. “Over the years it became increasingly more difficult to find products with quality ingredients at a good price point”, she explains. The chemical principles behind baking, such as mixing certain proportions of ingredients, obtaining the right ratio for the desired state of the product, and working with materials at specific temperatures are all transferrable skills that Pamela utilized to start creating skincare products her own. Busy Bee Pamela got to work about eight years ago on her homemade, now very successful product line “The Hive”. Members of “The Hive” include her famous top-selling hand creams, body butter, candles, glycerin, goat milk and honey bar soaps, and even a variety of products for your furry friends!
Growing up on a farm, Pamela always wanted to live and raise her children in a rural area as opposed to the city. She and her husband moved to the Niagara region about 27 years ago, specifically Grimsby. Their favourite part about living in the region is that although the grocery stores and schools were within walking distance, they were surrounded by small farms with great fresh and local produce. Being able to shop local at different farmer’s markets and roadside stands is the couple’s most beloved experience as a local in the region. Although Grimsby is an ever-growing town with more and more houses being built over the years, the couple enjoys a weekend escape to Niagara on the Lake (NOTL) as it very close to home for them. This summer, not only is NOTL a weekend get away for the couple, but it is recently now a weekend on the job! On August 8th we welcomed “The Hive” to pitch their first-ever tent with the Market @ The Village and it “was a splendid experience, and we are looking forward to coming back next year!”. The locals are friendly, and all very excited to shop locally and support the hard work of the farmers and individual business owners. Each vendor has something unique to offer that may not be available on the commercial market. In creating her soaps, Pamela uses locally sourced ingredients, making everything from scratch to ensure only the best possible products are brought to her table at The Market every Saturday. Many of the products which she produces have a custom scent composed of both essential and fragrance oils blended uniquely. Some of Pamela’s fall favourite candle blends include Lavender Lemon and Pumpkin Brûlée.
Being amidst a pandemic, started off her business a bit slow for “The Hive”, where they would normally attend multiple Farmers Markets in the region, Bazaars, and craft shows. This year The Market @ The Village did indeed open on time, with new protocols and layout designed to keep everyone as safe as possible. As for “The Hive”, NOTL Market may be the only event they attend this summer. On the bright side, the pandemic has swarmed individuals with more time to self reflect and hone-in on their creative side! For Pamela, the extra time on her hands provided her the opportunity to learn new techniques for things such as how to make glycerin soap. Glycerin soap is a non-toxic product, often favouring those with dry and sensitive skin. The time allowance has also allowed Pamela to expand her networking and selling platforms from word of mouth to using social media such as Facebook. After an early morning walk with her two dogs, the creation of candles, packaging, and labeling “The Hive” products, and providing her spa services, Pamela likes to sit down relax and brainstorm her next big product. If you happen to walk by “The Hive” at The Market @ The Village, you will notice a little handwashing station Pamela has set up for individuals to clean their hands with one of her two hand soaps. The majority of products from “The Hive” are packaged in mason jars and are refillable.
We hope to see you making a pitstop at The Hive’s handwashing station and have a chat with the lovely Sutherland couple this Saturday at The Market @ The Village!
