The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is pleased to announce a call for proposals from Ontario-based artists and artist-led teams for the creation of a permanent outdoor sculpture. This public art commission is an opportunity to honour Niagara-on-the-Lake’s agricultural legacy, with a particular emphasis on the grape and wine industry’s impact on the region.
The sculpture will pay tribute to Paul and Andrée Bosc, recipients of the 2006 NOTL Citizens of the Year award. As the founders of Château des Charmes winery, their vision and leadership helped position Niagara as Canada’s most celebrated wine region.
The selected artwork will be installed on the scenic outdoor grounds of the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre, overlooking the Niagara River. Artists are encouraged to creatively interpret the theme, producing a piece that speaks to the region’s heritage, community, and enduring spirit of innovation.
“This tribute is very meaningful to our family,” says Paul-André Bosc. “Niagara has always been at the heart of what we do—its richness, its story, and its people. We’re honoured that this legacy will be reflected in a work of art for the community to enjoy for generations to come.”
The call is open to all Ontario-based artists and collectives, including emerging artists. The selection process will unfold in two stages. In Stage 1, applicants must submit a concept statement, visual sketch or mock-up, proposed materials, budget estimate, curriculum vitae (CV), references, and samples of previous work. The deadline for Stage 1 submissions is May 31, 2025.
Up to three shortlisted applicants will be invited to develop a Stage 2 detailed proposal, each receiving a $500 honorarium. Final selections will be made by jury review in July 2025, followed by fabrication and installation of the completed work in the fall.
“We are proud to offer artists the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on our landscape through public art,” says Rima Boles, Director of the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre. “This sculpture will not only honour a remarkable family but also celebrate the agricultural heritage that continues to shape our identity.”
